Explicit User Consent Policy
Effective Date: 01 August 2025
- Policy Statement and Purpose
Veza Tech Global (Pty) Ltd (“Veza”) is committed to ensuring that the personal information of our users is collected and processed with their informed, voluntary, and explicit consent. This policy outlines how we obtain, manage, and record user consent for all data processing activities within the Veza mobile application and related services, in full compliance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
- Principles of Explicit Consent
Our approach to consent is guided by the following principles, as mandated by POPIA:
- Voluntary: Consent must be freely given, without coercion or pressure. Users must be able to refuse or withdraw consent at any time without penalty.
- Specific: Consent must be requested for a clearly defined and specific purpose. We cannot obtain a blanket consent for all future data processing. For example, we will request consent for location tracking separately from consent for marketing communications.
- Informed: Users must be provided with clear, accessible, and understandable information about the purpose of the data processing, the types of data being collected, and their rights. We will use plain language and avoid legal jargon.
- Explicit: Consent must be an active, unambiguous action by the user. We will not use pre-ticked boxes or rely on silence or inaction as a form of consent.
- Procedures for Obtaining Consent
We use different methods to obtain explicit consent depending on the type of data being collected.
3.1 Onboarding and Registration
During the initial setup of the Veza app, new users will be presented with a clear and concise summary of our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. They will be required to affirmatively check a box to indicate their acceptance.
3.2 Location Data
The core functionality of the Veza app relies on real-time location data to provide nearby events and specials.
- When a user first launches the app, a pop-up screen will explain why we need access to their location (i.e., “to show you nearby activities and specials”).
- The user must then affirmatively agree to grant this permission via their device’s built-in permission system.
- We will provide instructions on how the user can easily withdraw this consent at any time through their device settings.
3.3 Marketing and Promotional Communications
We will not use a user’s contact details for marketing purposes unless we have their specific consent.
- When a user signs up, a separate, un-ticked checkbox will be available for them to opt-in to marketing communications.
- All promotional emails or push notifications will include a clear and easy-to-use opt-out mechanism.
- Managing and Recording Consent
Veza maintains a verifiable record of all consent received from users.
- Record-Keeping: We will log the date and time of consent, the method used to obtain it (e.g., checkbox on the registration form), and the specific purpose for which consent was given.
- Consent Withdrawal: We have implemented a straightforward process for users to withdraw their consent at any time. This can be done through the app’s settings menu or by contacting our Information Officer.
- Consequences of Withdrawal: If a user withdraws consent for a specific processing activity, we will cease that activity immediately. We will also explain what functions of the app may be affected by the withdrawal of consent (e.g., “without access to your location, we cannot show you nearby events”).
- Review and Contact Information
This policy will be reviewed and updated at least annually or in response to changes in our data processing activities or relevant regulations.
